This article really hit home. I am blessed to have the freedom and flexibility to live a more leisurely life now that Ive retired from the military. A lot of people in my situation get another job right away and continue with the grind culture - but I just cant do that anymore. I want to live and love fully with the time I have left.
Glad you are ahead of the curve on age, Todd. Your wisdom is spot on. I’m 77, but my brain refuses to accept that. What it has learned to accept is I need to ask for help when I don’t want to. I’m short in stature, so asking for help is a necessity now. I don’t like it, but it’s reality. Accept it Judy! Humor is really important as you age because many things suck. I may as well laugh at it rather than use up all my curse words in one occasion. Pausing is imperative. Drinking electrolytes is important. Talking with your friends irreplaceable because one of them might be dead tomorrow. Savor beauty and appreciate every minute if sparkle. It beats another hour of work. Ask yourself what really matters and who really matters. Be nice to your wrinkled body because it won’t heal as fast as it used to. And that’s annoying as hell. When you get something done, praise yourself. Do little things for other people you love or people you don’t even know, that’s even better. OK, that’s my Sunday morning wisdom and it just hit me that “Thanks for the memories” is essential. Gratitude that your brain is still processing hanging in and letting go.
I love this article, I do…and I worked for 36 years and supported my children and my husband non-stop through three countries and many life stages with no time for me..so, if you think you have certain amount of time, I am guaranteeing that women have even less time, and no one’s talking about it… any time I do get to myself, which is literally three hours a week when I’m not having to work, cook, clean or drive one of my two daughters somewhere and pick them up and be present for them, is spent on planning ahead and writing to stay afloat, unless it’s one of those days where I just say fuck it and grab a bottle of wine and go to bed because I just can’t hold any more in my heart or head….🥺😘 time is all we have and now I am on the wrong side of 55, that starts to bite.. for all of us. I don’t know what the answer is but I do know that there is and always has been an inexcusable, unjustifiable imbalance.
The FIRE stuff has always intrigued me for all the reasons you’re talking about! Life feels too short (and we all need access to more leisure time).
Also feels very American to grind too much…even when SES is in the mix
Yes. And I am aware that much of this is an opportunity many don’t have. But I can’t write that caveat for every article.
But even still. Sports like soccer and nature hikes and swims in a lake. I wish more for everyone.

Why women don’t get enough ‘me-time’ (and men do)

This article is an ode to what you deserve. The gender in equity in the house is real.
Yup! Well documented thanks so much for your camaraderie
