Repetition results in habituation, which takes the edge off the "tension" being experienced. How do we avoid slipping into cynicism, jadedness, and apathy on these issues?
Michael damn good question. I don't have the answer. How do we lessen our relationship fear without swapping it for cynicism or apathy?
I need to think about that one. My brain immediately turns to the importance of holding ideas loosely. Reminds me of an argument I had with a cousin of mine who is on the margins of extreme progressive/liberal thinking. He kept telling me I had to listen to him and not shut out dissenting views. In short, I said, I welcome dissent but I can predict with 90-100% certainty how you think politically because you abide by the party line. Thus you are not a dissenting view because there is no variance. To my amazement, he responded - I never thought of that, I need to reflect on that because I don't want to be thought of that way.
Hold those ideas loosely. But still, be discerning.
One strategy that comes to mind is to ensure you make space for the heartwarming to supplement the gut-wrenching stuff.
Your suggestion to immerse oneself in the negative headline and bathe in the details is a good one. I think to avoid apathy, we need to take a similar approach with savouring and devouring the highlights of humanity. Place equal value on both sides of the equation.
