I. Widely Circulated Quotes

My co-author Robert Biswas-Diener and I love how new readers continue to uncover psychological insights from The Upside of Your Dark Side. Here are six quotes that seem to resonate:

  1. On the benefits of mindlessness.

Set ridiculously short deadlines-- ten seconds-- in which to make decisions that you have already spent a few minutes paralyzed about what to do. By doing this, you force a mindless decision.

  2. On intuition.

Set rules for the use of intuition. When you have a simple choice to make, you will e better off with logical, deliberate method.

  3. On the benefits of low-grade narcissism.

Narcissists have grandiose visions of themselves, which result in the vigorous pursuit of goals where they get to showcase just how unique, visionary, and potent they think they are.

  4. On creativity I.

The first rule of creativity is that you must be able to risk being wrong, risk making mistakes, and risk public scrutiny. [NOTE: click here for more]

  5. On creativity II.

When we want to get rid of uncertainty, we harbor negative attitudes toward creativity. To be open and receptive to creative ideas, we need to be open and receptive to discomfort.

  6. On multiple dimensions of well-being.

A life of meaning that is devoid of pleasure is, frankly, no fun. On the other hand, a life fully given over to the pursuit of pleasure may miss out on the benefits of having objectives that we aspire to accomplish, or to become, namely, a purpose in life.
