In 2003, as a graduate student, I had several interviews for assistant professor jobs. One came from an Ivy League university, celebrated worldwide. Another arrived from a university where my academic hero, the very person who sparked my passion for curiosity research, extended a personal invitation. The third offer was from George Mason University. The allure of prestige was undeniable.
The insights from this decision exposed the deeply screwed-up nature of higher education. My view of that Ivy League university, where I once interviewed, is tainted. When they dominated headlines for months over their gross mishandling of anti-Semitism, I wasn't shocked at all.
