In February 2019, Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques floated 250 miles above Earth aboard the International Space Station when he did something unexpected during a live broadcast. Instead of that inspirational “one small step for man” stuff, he started babbling about his loneliness.

What millions of viewers observed matched “the secret” in relationships discovered in 1906 by a German sociologist named Georg Simmel.
